The roof at Hacker Middle School leaks. The asphalt pavements at other schools in the Mountain Home School District area are falling apart. Older school buildings still have asbestos in their walls. But there's just not enough money in the district's budget to deal with all those issues...

Mountain Home Superintendent of Schools Tim McMurtrey has resigned, effective at the end of the school year. McMurtrey's resignation was tendered to the school district board of trustees last week. The board quickly named deputy superintendent James Gilbert as the man who will replace McMurtrey and lead the district beginning with the next school year...

Dear editor: Sometimes I hate to see an election day coming. Like too many drivers, there are too many voters who have no business being out there. Some Jay Leno "Jay-walking" college kid who doesn't know the capitol city of his home state, has a vote that counts the same as YOURS does, and it's usually for the wrong candidate. The Mountain Home Fire Department has decided to drain its burnout fund to help the victims of last week's Day Meadows apartment complex fire. The fund had stood at $9,000, but all of that is being disbursed. Money for the fund comes from donations and the proceeds from the Fireman's Ball (which will be held next month)...
