Watch for cows by Hwy 51

Drivers whose actions behind the wheel lead to the injury or death of cows in designated “open range” areas along roadways such as Highway 51 could end up having to provide financial compensation to farmers who owned that cattle, according to information released by the Idaho Transportation Department.

Following the death of four cows hit by motorists driving on Highway 51 over the past month, officials with the Idaho Transportation Department urged drivers to remain alert while driving along open range land, including the highway leading toward Bruneau.

In a press release Friday afternoon, state transportation department officials said this state highway includes 14 open range signs located between the Nevada border to north of Bruneau, all of which flash when cows wander near the highway.
