ELMORE COUNTY, Idaho — The Idaho State Police (ISP) is independently investigating a deputy-involved shooting by the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office following a vehicle crash on Interstate 84.

In the afternoon hours of November 5, law enforcement received reports of a vehicle driving recklessly eastbound on I-84. The vehicle reportedly crossed into oncoming traffic and ultimately crashed near milepost 87, igniting a small brush fire.

At the crash site, an Elmore County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to take the 36-year-old male driver from Idaho into custody but was engaged in a physical altercation. The situation escalated, and the deputy discharged his firearm multiple times, injuring the driver.

The driver received immediate emergency medical care and was airlifted by St. Luke’s Air Ambulance to a local hospital. He remains in critical condition but is expected to survive.

At the request of the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office, ISP is conducting an independent investigation. Upon completion, ISP will submit its findings to the local Prosecutor’s Office for review.

Updates will be provided as information becomes available to keep the public informed.
