Doyle Mays
Doyle Mays, 86, of Mountain Home, on June 19, 2018 has gone home to be with his beloved wife Mary in heaven. Services will be held on Thursday, June 28, 2018, at Rost Funeral Home, McMurtrey Chapel, in Mountain Home. The funeral service will begin at 10:00 AM, and inurnment with military honors will be held at 2:00 PM at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery in Boise.
Doyle was born September 6, 1931, in Donansburg, Kentucky, to Thomas and Elizabeth Davis Mays. He is the youngest of 9 children and was raised with his siblings on the family farm. Doyle did not care for farming so at 17 he left home to join the US Air Force. His parents learned of his new career through a letter. Doyle wrote the letter while he was on a train heading for basic training. After 20 years in the Air Force, Doyle retired with the rank of Senior Master Sergeant at the age of 37 in Mountain Home. He later worked for the US Postal Service in Boise for many years.
While stationed in Tucson, Arizona, Doyle met his beloved wife Mary on a blind date on Christmas Eve. The couple married 2 years later on January 23, 1954. They had 4 children, Debra Mays (Bromiley), born in Tucson, Arizona, Kenneth Mays, born in Nagoya, Japan, Thomas Mays, born in Mountain Home, and Evon Mays (Taylor), born in Greensburg, Kentucky.
Doyle enjoyed family, hunting, fishing, and tending to his garden. He and his wife Mary often vacationed in their RV; he fished and she worked on crafts and sewed.
Due to diminishing health, Doyle became a resident of the Idaho State Veterans Home in Boise. He lived out his last days in the facility.
He is survived by his daughter, Debra (Wayne) Bromiley, son, Ken (Karleen) Mays, son, Thomas (Barbara) Mays, daughter, Evon (Russ) Taylor, 14 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary, his parents, 8 siblings, and 1 granddaughter.
