In the spirit of giving

Bob and Sandy Sonnentag pose for a photo before they start their volunteer work at St. Luke's Elmore medical center. Starting their ninth year at the local hospital, the couple are known as the "ER Angels," and help the emergency department staff with a variety of non-clinical duties. Their work begins each Wednesday evening as they don their blue volunteer coats and take care of tasks that free up the nursing staff so they can spend more time with patients. Each December, the Sonnentags dress up as Santa and Mrs. Claus and celebrate Christmas with the long-term care residents and their families. "Having Santa and Mrs. Claus distribute gifts makes the day memorable for the residents. Staff also enjoy it, bringing in their children or grandchildren to pose for a photo with Santa," said Gayle Vargas, director of nursing services with the long-term care unit.
