County election results: Nielsen, Wills defeated

Tuesday, May 17, 2016

State officials that represent Elmore County went down in defeat as voters selected others to replace them while an extension of a supplemental school levy gained local voter support during Tuesday's primary election.

Initial results released by the county elections office showed that seven-term State Representative Pete Nielsen had lost to challenger Megan Blanksma during a three-person race for the Republican ticket.

Meanwhile, State Representative Rich Wills of Glenns Ferry lost during the county primary to Republican challenger Christy Zito of Hammett.

In local races, the name of Elmore County's next sheriff became a little clearer after Mike Hollinshead beat Chief Deputy Mike Barclay during the Republican primary.

In related election news, voters in the Mountain Home area gave their support to extend a supplemental levy to maintain the Mountain Home School District's day-to-day operations.

More election coverage will appear in the May 18 edition of the Mountain Home News.

Congratulations to Mike Hollinshead. It looks like the people of Elmore County will have a sheriff they can be proud of!

  • Have we forgotten already who has been serving our Sheriffs Department for over 40 years? Rick Layher has done a magnificent job for us over his career. We are very proud of what he has done and are appreciative of his service. He has raised the bar to new levels in the Department since the days of Earl Winters and Bob Mendiola. I fear you comment is trying to convey something else. "We have always had a Sheriff we are very proud of - Rick Layer".

    GF Concerned,

I have known Rick Layher for over a quarter of a century and worked with him. I suspect I and others like me have seen a side of Rick Layher that you have not!
