Jim Morrison
James (Jim) Lorenzo Morrison, 87, of Grand View, passed away peacefully at home, with his family by his side, on Oct. 25, 2014.
He was a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Jim was born at his grandmother's home in Dayton, Idaho, to James P. Morrison and Raye (Rae) Perkins Morrison on Oct. 6, 1927. He was the seventh of eight children.
As a young boy he worked with his father on their ranch and farm. Jim attended school in a one-room school house in New Sweden, Idaho.
When he was 16, he asked his older sister, Wilma, to forge their mother's signature so he could join the Merchant Marines, where he served three years during World War II.
During his time in the military his family moved from Idaho Falls, to Hammett. After his service, he joined his family in Hammett. He resumed his schooling and graduated from Glenns Ferry High School.
On May 6, 1953, he married Dolly Hardiman. They had four children together, Jim (1954), Renae (1956), Marie (1958) and John (1959).
Jim and Dolly lived and farmed in Hammett for twelve years, after which they moved to Little Valley, between Bruneau and Grand View.
From 1963 to 1967 he was instrumental in transforming approximately 7,000 acres of land from dry desert sage brush to irrigated farmland through desert land entries.
Jim had a lifelong love of learning, which he shared with his grandchildren through educational games and field trips. His grandchildren will always remember the many field trips to Idaho's interesting landmarks. His family admired his determination to continue his formal education, even attending college into his 60s.
He was very patriotic and kept up on politics and current events.
He enjoyed history, poetry, science, government and especially music. He had a beautiful voice and loved to sing to his children and grandchildren. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren always knew him as "Poppy."
He was not one to seek attention or the limelight. He decried the materialism in today's society and instead preferred to live a simple life. He always loved the visits from his great-grandchildren and would send them home full of Pepsi and sugar, much to the chagrin of their mothers.
On Oct. 18, 2014, along with many friends and family, he celebrated his sister Wilma's 100th birthday.
Jim was kind-hearted and loving and will be missed greatly by his family and friends.
The family would like to thank his daughter, Marie Hipwell, for caring for him during the last years of his life.
He is survived by his older sister, Wilma Hoagland, his children's mother, his four children, 23 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters, Sara (1913), Keith (1916), Joseph (1918), Grant (1920), Helen (1922), and Gene (1931), and by his son-in-law, Rick Hipwell.
A viewing for family and friends will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Oct.31, at the Grand View Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Service's will begin at 11 a.m. with a luncheon to follow. He will be laid to rest at Glenn Rest Cemetery in Glenns Ferry at 3 p.m. for those who wish to attend. The funeral is under the direction of Rost Funeral Home, McMurtrey Chapel, in Mountain Home.
