Weather ends Tigers' misery during loss to B.K.
A bolt of lightening struck near Ben Ysursa Field Friday night, causing officials to end the 4A Southern Idaho Conference football game between Mountain Home and Bishop Kelly with 58 seconds left in the third quarter.
It may have been merciful, as the Knights of Bishop Kelly were leading the Mountain Home Tigers 56-14 at the time.
Bishop Kelly received the opening kickoff and ran it back to the Tiger 43-yard line. Six plays later the Knights were in the end zone and led 7-0 with 9:18 left in the first quarter.
Mountain Home went three-and-out on this first possession and despite a high snap from center, Jesse Cobos managed to get a low, line-drive punt off from the end zone. But the Knights started their net possession at the Mountain Home 14-yard line.
With an extremely short field, Bishop Kelly was in the end zone three plays later, making it 14-0 with 6:32 left in the quarter.
A penalty gave Mountain Home its first first down, but the Tigers eventually punted the ball back to the Knights, who used just one play to score on a 59-yard pass to go up 20-0 with 3:59 left in the first quarter.
Mountain Home managed to pick up another first down on its next possession before punting the ball back to the Knights.
Bishop Kelly then went 65 yards in nine plays to up its lead to 27-0 with 10:47 left in the first half.
AJ Daniels ran back the kickoff to the Mountain Home 42 and the Tigers finally put together some offense, going 58 yards in seven plays, Jesse Cobos connecting with AJ Daniels on a 30-yard touchdown pass. With the point-after try by Mariano Areco, it was 27-7, with 9:06 left in the half.
The Knights then went 80 yards in 11 plays to score again and go up 34-7 with 5:45 left.
Bishop Kelly would score another touchdown, and get the ball back on the Tiger 15 with 0.3 seconds left when the Knights kicked a 32-yard field goal to go into the locker room, up 43-7 at halftime.
After going three-and-out to start the third quarter, Mountain Home forced the Knights to punt for the first time in the game.
Mountain Home followed by also going three-and-out, having to punt. But the snap from center was once again over Jesse Cobos' head and he was tackled at the Tiger nine-yard line, where the Knights took over, first and goal.
Two penalties helped the Tigers out and moved the ball back to the Tiger 29, but Bishop Kelly scored from there on a pass play to up its lead to 50-7 with 7:39 left in the third quarter.
Mountain Home then put together an 80-yard, 11-play drive, Jesse Cobos once again teaming up with AJ Daniels, this time on a 27-yard scoring pass. With Mariano Areco's PAT, it was 50-14, with 4:29 left in the third quarter.
The Knights took just three plays to score their next touchdown and go up 56-14.
Mountain Home had another good possession going, and had moved the ball to the Knights' 43-yard line, when the bolt of lightning struck close, causing the game to be stopped. The players moved off the field and with lightning continuing to strike close, the game was ended with 58 seconds left in the third quarter.
"Despite the score, our kids played really well," said Tiger head football coach Aaron Rodney.
"What I was pleased with was our effort. Our kids played really hard and didn't quit. Bishop Kelly was a much bigger and more physical team, and despite being overmatched, our kids played hard."
Jesse Cobos completed 19 of 27 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns.
AJ Daniels led the receivers with five catches for 77 yards and two scores. He also had 103 yards in kickoff returns.
Tanner Sessions led the rushing game with 70 yards on 11 rushes.
Defensively, Tanner Sessions led the way with 14 tackles. Justin Lawrence added nine tackles.
Mountain Home is now 0-1 in conference play and 1-4 overall.
The Tigers are back home Friday night to take on the Middleton Vikings in conference action. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Tiger Field.
