Lady Tigers beat Skyview before shutout by Bishop Kelly
Mountain Home came away with a split of its conference softball games last week, winning at Skyview but losing at home to Bishop Kelly.
Mountain Home 8, Skyview 6
The Mountain Home Lady Tigers erupted for four runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead and held off Skyview, 8-6, last Thursday afternoon at Skyview High School in Nampa.
The Lady Tigers started well, scored three times in the top of the first. Skyview got two of them back in the bottom half of the first, but the score stayed at 3-2 until the fifth inning, when Mountain Home increased it to 4-2 in the top of the inning. The Lady Hawks then pushed across three in the bottom half of the inning to take a 5-4 lead.
Back came Mountain Home in the top of the sixth, scoring four runs to take an 8-5 lead.
Skyview managed a run in the seventh to make it an 8-6 final.
Mountain Home Lady Tiger softball coach Ron Nicolosi was pleased with the win.
"What a great win. I'm very proud of the girls today," the coach said. "Offensively, the girls have been working hard on their approach at the plate, especially with runners in scoring position, and we saw some very good improvement today.
"Defensively, I cannot believe how solid we are," the coach added. "We made some tough plays tonight that were absolutely stellar. Maeghan (Pomerantz) had a great night at short and the team really fed off that. She was directly involved in 50 percent of the outs in the final four innings."
Bishop Kelly 14,
Mountain Home 0
(6 innings)
Bishop Kelly led from the start and put the game away with a six-run sixth inning to down the Lady Tigers 14-0 in six innings Friday at Memmelaar Field in Mountain Home.
A five-run third inning for the league-leading Lady Knights put them up 6-0. They added two in the fifth and their six runs in the sixth spelled a 14-0 Bishop Kelly win.
Mountain Home managed just one hit off two Bishop Kelly pitchers, a fourth-inning single by Taylor Reed.
The Lady Knights got 16 hits off Heather Adams and McKenna Lewis.
"What a difference a day makes," Coach Nicolosi said after the game. "This was a great game to be able to compare and gauge our level of play against one of the top teams in the conference. A
"Although the score looks terrible, we actually played four good innings against them," the coach added. "It was also a very frustrating day. Out of their 16 hits, only a handful were hit hard. Heather really did not pitch as bad as the score indicates. I've never seen so many balls that just eluded our gloves as I saw today. We also made little mistakes defensively that BK capitalized on."
The Lady Tigers drop to 2-4 in conference and 3-7 overall.
They have three games this week, hosting Jerome on Tuesday, traveling to Kuna on Thursday and traveling to Middleton on Friday.
