Trinity Mountain Recreation Area opens
The U.S. Forest Service's Mountain Home District opened several recreation sites in the high elevation Trinity Mountain area this week that had remained closed due to late melting heavy snow fields.
Open sites include Big Roaring Campground, Little Roaring Campground, Big Trinity Campground, and Little Trinity Picnic Area along with the rental cabin.
Forest Road 129 -- the primary north access route to the Trinity Mountain Recreation Area -- also opened.
Access to Trinity Mountain Lookout remains blocked by snow drifts and is not staffed. Forest Road 129 between Big Roaring Campground south to the Cold Springs gate is also blocked by snow over the summit.
"The campground water system is on and all fees now apply to the sites," said District Ranger Stephaney Church. "Access roads are rough, with some exposed rocks, so a high clearance vehicle is recommended until the roads can be maintained."
Recreation Officer Wintauna Belt noted that mosquitos in the region remain active. Trails to the popular high elevation lakes are generally open, but there has not been any maintenance completed yet this season.
