Public meeting set Wednesday on Luna ed plan

Tuesday, February 22, 2011

A special town hall meeting has been called for next Wednesday, Feb. 23, to discuss Supt. of Public Instruction Tom Luna's proposed changes in how public education is taught in Idaho.

The meeting, organized by Jimmy Schipani, will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Mountain Home High School gymnasium.

Copies of Luna's proposal, which includes raising class sizes and providing a laptop for all high school students, who will be required to take two on-line courses a year, will be available.

Sen. Tim Corder is expected to speak, as well as local school administrators and Mayor Tom Rist.

Schipani urged all parents of students in the district to attend the meeting to learn more about Luna's proposal and ask questions.

  • look over all the teachers you have had in your school years and how many good teachers have you had... i have had a lot more poor teachers than good ones and a lot of the poor ones have higher degrees including ph's. so if you can get rid of the poor ones lets do it, and pay for the good ones.

  • With all the fuss over what is being proposed there has been absolutely nothing done about proposing another solution to this issue. I am in favor of abolishing tenure for teachers as well as getting our kids on board with computer skills they are currently lacking. I have attended online schooling and it is not easy and makes a student apply themself. Our kids are in need of a better education and less lazy teachers who don't care once they have tenure.

  • You know something cant justwatch, you are a heartless, pathetic person. You know NOTHING about education or the impact these bills will have on public education in the state of Idaho.

    The problem with today's education has NOTHING to do with teachers..it has everything to do with;

    1. State Legislatures, who keep slashing budgets

    2. Parents, who don't know how to be one

    3. People like YOU!!!!!!!!!

    You make me ill!!!

  • Dumb:

    How can you call someone heartless and pathetic when you do not even know the person? You all hide behind screen names and have no idea what the other is doing or has done for the community. For all you know CJW runs the local food bank or works for the MHSD. You have no clue.

    As for your opinion on Luna's Bill and where education is going---you offer no viable solutions to the problems at hand.

    For the last 10 years the MHSD has had declined enrollment. Why have cuts not been made over the last 10 years so that things were no so messed up? Our MHSD should be run like a business. They should have a budget and only spend what they have.

    This reaching into the taxpayer's pockets every time it hits the fan needs to end. The people in this community only make so much and can only AFFORD to pay so much. The way it is going currently we can look forward to more empty homes, less population and higher taxes. Not really why I WANT to work any harder than I do. Guess that makes me heartless and pathetic too because God forbid that anyone who demands accountability could be right!
