Tiger runners show strength
The Mountain Home, Jerome and Twin Falls girls will battle for places at state next week, and all three were at the Mountain Home Invitational cross country meet at Desert Canyon Golf Course last week, where one point separated the three teams.
Jerome won the girls event with 43 points. Twin Falls and Mountain Home both finished with 44 points, but with the tie-breaker being where the team's sixth runner finished, Twin Falls claimed second place. Nampa was a distant fourth with 99 points and Wood River came in with 136.
Sarah Richins led the Mountain Home girls, finishing fifth with a time of 20:47.00. Jordan Vivier was seventh (21:13), Arisha Karren ninth (21:32), Kacee Cameron 10th (21:38), Haley Schaefer 13th (22:03) and Ashley Mayberry 25th (24:46).
Twin Falls won the boys race with 36 points. Wood River was second with 49, Jerome and Burley both finished with 79 points, with Jerome getting the tie-breaker, Mountain Home was fifth with 117 and Nampa sixth with 138.
Mike Price led the Mountain Home boys with an eighth-place finish, his time of 17:55.03 setting a new personal best -- his fourth of the season.
Dylan Johnson was 13th with a time of 18:16.29, Daniel Courtright came in 27th (19.19.17 -- a new PR), Jake Schaefer was 33rd (19:37.38), Steven Kreyche 36th (19:51.42), Alex Burke 39th (20:07.45) and John Dodge 42nd (20:22.27).
"It was an excellent race," said Tiger cross country coach Doug Root after the meet. "In the girls' race, you couldn't ask for any closer to what we ran. We performed, they performed, it was a great race. My boys ran well, too, so I was very pleased with the way we ran today."
The Tigers head to Eagle Island State Park Thursday to run in the district meet. Coach Root expects his runners to do well.
"If the boys run really tough, they've got a chance to go to state next week. The girls should do well. Right now they're second in the district behind Bishop Kelly and third or fourth in the state."
The state meet is Saturday in Soda Springs.
