Grand View horse trainer places at nationals

Tom Hagwood does some rope tricks on the horse he trained.

A horse trainer from Grand View earned a national ranking and $10,000 prize during an annual wild Mustang competition held last month.

Tom Hagwood was among the 83 competitors from 23 states that entered this year's Supreme Extreme Mustang Makeover, held at the Will Rogers Memorial Complex in Fort Worth, Texas.

Larry Schuldt from Idaho Falls was the state's other representative at this year's event.

Similar to other Mustang competitions held across the United States, the supreme makeover event tests the ability of horse trainers to domesticate these once-wild animals, a process known as "gentling." These Mustangs came from herds of feral horses that roam rangelands managed by the Bureau of Land Management across 10 Western states.
