One of Union Pacific Railroad's vintage steam locomotives is now expected to roll through Mountain Home on Friday and again later this month as part of a 15-day tour of cities across the Pacific Northwest.
Known as the Portland Rose, the locomotive will likely arrive in Mountain Home between 1:30 and 2 p.m. on Friday and again around 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 21.
A Union Pacific spokesman said the locomotive's speed tends to vary greatly depending on the track grade and may arrive here sooner than expected. It's also possible the locomotive's crew will slow down as they pass through town to give people here a chance to view this restored engine.
The Portland Rose will travel more than 2,300 miles from its base in Wyoming to celebrate Union Pacific's role in helping build the western United States, according to a company press release.
"Since 1862, Union Pacific Railroad has been working to build America while connecting the communities that define it," said Scott Moore, vice president of public affairs for Union Pacific's Western Region.
