UPDATE - Fire destroys home in Glenns Ferry.
A mobile home at 325 South Oneida Street was completely destroyed by fire Wednesday afternoon.
Glenns Ferry Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a house fire at approximately 2:10 p.m. Fire Chief Bob Janousek said the structure was completely engulfed when crews arrived on scene. No one was home at the time and a dog inside the home escaped without injury.
Justin Johanson, 18, of Glenns Ferry told Deputy Kevin Henslee that the fire started as he was pouring gas into a weed-whacker. Johanson had been using the equipment and said gas spilled onto the hot motor. Johanson singed the hair on his legs but was not injured.
Johanson told Deputy Henslee that when the fire started he threw the gas can and weed-whacker in opposite directions. He was in the carport at the time, as was his car, which also was damaged in the fire. Henslee searched the area and found debris that he believes might have been part of the weed-whacker. The fire has been ruled an accident and a citation was not issued.
The home is owned by Janie Bickfore and was being rented by Pedro and Crystal Samano.
The fire department responded with two pumpers and one brush truck. Janousek estimates the loss at between $50,000 and $75,000.
A fund for the Samanos has been started by Pedro's employer, Southside Market. Donations can be placed in a box at the store.
