Multiple major accidents reported on icy roads; one killed

Friday, April 2, 2010

Authorities are responding Friday night to reports of multiple accidents on I-84, most between Mountain Home and Glenns Ferry.

One person is confirmed dead in an accident at milepost 119, just west of Glenns Ferry.

More than a dozen people have been transported to Elmore Medical Center, including 7 from one accident alone, following more than a score of slide-offs and rollovers. A call has been put out asking that all area EMTs and other medical personnel report to the hospital.

Driving conditions are extremely hazardous due to snow and slick road conditions, and are expected to get worse as the slush freezes later tonight.

Authorities are asking all drivers to be extra cautious on the roads tonight and to drive at speeds based on road conditions, which should be considerably less than posted speed limits.

Drivers also should be on the alert for emergency vehicles and crews on the roadway and be prepared to slow down upon coming upon any accident scene.

One accident at milepost 106 breached a fence near where a herd of cattle had been grazing, so there is a potential for cattle to be on the roadway in that area. Drivers are warned to exercise extreme caution.
