Readers: Beware of grandparent scam
Dear editor:
Grandparents Beware: Don't be taken in if you get a phone call and the male voice says "Grandma, I need your help." He claims he's been arrested in Montreal, Canada, and needs money to return home. He asked me for $2,000. I said no, because I'd read about this scam (before).
Since then, I have heard that several people right here in town have been contacted by this guy. Hopefully, nobody wired him any money. Maybe our bankers could be of help. If they could advise their tellers to be suspicious if an elderly customer makes an unusually large withdrawal. They might ask the customers if it's going to Montreal to their grandchild. It just might save our senior citizens some of their hard-earned money.
This scam artist sounds very convincing and I'm sure he's made a small fortune off some unsuspecting grandparents. Don't fall for it.
