Be aware, prevent child abuse
Dear editor:
In the April 22nd edition of the Mountain Home News, Monte McConnell urged residents to share their experiences and thoughts related to child abuse.
I grew up in a small Kansas town; no spotlights, no fast food, no nothing... a small, quiet Kansas town. Even in a community such as mine, I witnessed child abuse and all of its ugly effects.
I encourage parents and others with children in their lives, no town is ever too small and no town is ever too safe to be immune to child abuse.
Please, know who your children's friends are and who they spend time with--both peers and adults. If you suspect abuse, ask.
If it's a friend or a neighbor, still ask--out of love and concern for the children. If a child or teen ever confirms abuse, report it to the local authorities regardless of who the abuser is.
If you are concerned about what people may think, please put that aside for the safety of our children. Through awareness and open communication, each one of us can help prevent child abuse and make our community a safer, healthier place to live.
