Boys basketball loses two by same score
The Mountain Home Tigers let one get away from them at home, but came from behind to win on the road last week as they split their conference boys basketball games.
Vikings 55
Tigers 46
Middleton put together big first and third quarters to hold off the Tigers, 55-46, Friday night in boys conference action in Lloyd Schiller Gymnasium in Mountain Home.
Mountain Home led 2-0 early, but after the Vikings answered it and took the lead they never trailed again. The Tigers trailed 15-7 after a quarter, and went on a 7-0 run to start the second quarter to come within one, 15-14, but fell behind 28-22 by halftime.
Mountain Home managed just six points in the third quarter, as the Vikings upped their lead to 43-28 heading into the final quarter.
The Tigers poured in 18 points in the fourth but could not overcome the deficit against the hot shooting Vikings, losing to Middleton 55-48.
"We haven't had too many chances to attack a zone, and I don't think we understand the concept, although we've gone over it, reversing the basketball and then trying to get it inside," said Tiger basketball coach Tony Kerfoot.
"When we did do that, we started putting some points up, but I think we went through a big time span where we weren't looking to do that. I thought the difference in the ballgame in the first half was their steals and lay-ins, and we missed some real wide open shots right at the rim -- I think we missed at least three of those in the first half.
"I thought the missed opportunities offensively for us, and you've got to give them a little credit on their defensive opportunities they made for themselves, were important in the outcome of the game."
D.J. Elliott led the Tigers in scoring with 12 points, Alex Campbell added eight and brought down 11 rebounds. Deion Brown, Trevor Woodruff and Danny Snelgrow each scored six points. Kyle Kerfoot, playing in his first game since Dec. 19, scored four points and David Bitrick added two.
The Tigers shot a frigid 12 percent (3/26) on their long balls, and hit 47 percent (15/32) inside the arc, and shot just 54 percent (7/13) from the foul line.
Middleton only put up five three-point attempts and made two of them for 40 percent. They shot 51 percent on two-pointers, and 60 percent (9/15) from the free throw line.
Tigers 59
Nampa 54
The Tigers took the lead in the second half and never gave it up as they snapped a three-game losing skid with a 59-54 conference win over the Nampa Bulldogs Saturday night in Nampa.
The first quarter saw three ties and four lead changes, with Nampa up 11-10 after a quarter.
Trevor Woodruff's trey with just over two minutes left in the half gave Mountain Home a 20-16 lead, but Nampa responded with a 10-2 run to go in to the locker room up 26-22.
Danny Snelgrow hit a trey with 5:15 left in the third quarter that gave the Tigers the lead back, 33-30, and Mountain Home would never trail again. The Tigers were up 43-41 heading into the fourth quarter.
A 9-0 run to start the fourth put the Tigers up, 52-41, with 4:49 left, but Nampa battled back, cutting the margin to three, 57-54, with 22 seconds left.
When Mountain Home turned the ball over with 20 seconds left, the Bulldogs had a chance to tie, but could not get a three to drop, and D.J. Elliott hit two free throws to ice the game, 59-54.
"I thought there were spurts where we played real good basketball and we did some good things," said Coach Kerfoot in radio comments after the game.
"A little collapse at times, but on back-to-back nights it's nice to see we can come back on that, and traveling over to Nampa, because it's not always easy to win at Nampa, and I thought there were some things that went against us that last minute and a half there that we didn't really have control of, but we still survived, so I'm just happy we made the shots when we needed to and made the plays when we needed to."
D.J. Elliott led the Tigers with 14 points. Kyle Kerfoot, Logan Monasterio and Deion Brown each added seven, for Brown, a new season high, Danny Snelgrow scored six, Trevor Woodruff and Alex Campbell both scored five, and David Bitrick and Chris Maholick both had four to round out the scoring.
The Tiger hit three of 11 (27 percent) three-point shots, hit 46 percent (13/28) of their twos, and cashed in at the free-throw line for 24 of 34 for 71 percent.
Nampa shot 31 percent (5/16) on treys, 35 percent (12/34) inside the arc, and 68 percent (15/22) from the foul line.
The Tigers won the battle of the boards, 33-25, with D.J. Elliott bringing down nine boards.
The win improved the Tigers to 5-9 on the season, and 4-5 in conference play.
Mountain Home hosted Kuna last night, and travel over to Columbia on Friday night.
