Why do they call it "Black Friday?"

Dear editor:

I wonder why the big shopping day, the day after Thanksgiving, is called Black Friday. Let's get rid of "Black Friday." Let's call it Blue Friday or Green Friday -- anything but "Black" unless of course it would be "black" because of a highway accident I witnessed in Boise today near the Orchard exit to the freeway or because of the doorman who was trampled to death in a New York Wal-Mart store when he let eager shoppers in.
