Going green good call for city

Wednesday, July 9, 2008

Last week, we ran a story about the city preparing to purchase some electric cars (mini-trucks actually).

This is a great move by the city and besides being very "green" it reflects what the future of the 21st century is going to look like.

Oil prices aren't going to go down. In fact, although it is a matter of highly contentious debate among the experts, there are some experts who think we may be reaching the end of oil supplies in this century (at least any oil that can reasonably be expected to be recovered).

So the future will, eventually, see our modes of transportation, and many other energy uses, move away from oil. Ethanol can serve as in interim energy solution, but doesn't help with the global warming issue that fossil fuels have created.

So the future is in electric cars and hydrogen fuel technology. The trick is getting the ball rolling to make the conversion. The city is helping do that, and it's a good idea, especially since these vehicles don't need to reach high speeds or travel long distances before being recharged.

But it's a start, and the city should be praised for being farsighted enough to do it.
