Prisoners should work off fines
Wednesday, April 30, 2008
Dear editor:
Whatever happened to making prisoners work off their fines in the community?
I cannot believe that the courts will put a person in jail for driving with a suspended license. Instead of giving them community service to work off their fine.
Did you know it costs $25 a day for a inmate to stay in jail, up to a $500 maximum.
And did you know that most inmates do not have that kind of money. So if they can't pay, us as taxpayers pick up the tab.
Why not give them community service and make them work off there fine? It's better than having them just sit in jail doing nothing until they are released.
