Memorial Park sculptures to be dedicated

The arborist saw two trees that needed to be removed.
The Girl Scouts envisioned a sculpture to keep their roots in Memorial Park alive.
Girl Scouts from Troops 003 and 599 will unveil their Silver Award project at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at Memorial Park (also known at Triangle Park).
They call the sculpture "We Reap From the Seeds That We Sow" and it pays tribute to the first Girl Scout troop in Mountain Home that planted another tree on the land in 1949.
Troop leader Stephanie Aiken assisted the girls with forming a collaboration with the city, artist Don Collins, the Mountain Home Arts Council and community volunteers.
"We had a park that needed to have two trees removed," Aiken said. "And the leaders and girls thought that it was an opportunity to have a sculpture done from the stump."
The city council agreed in April and the girls began the project by painting the surface of the tree black. Collins chalked out the cut marks and they were on their way. Before long the forms of a standing woman they named Marian and a kneeling girl they call Isabella began taking shape.
The project was recently completed after several months of work.
