Wright crowned Homecoming Queen
Amber Wright was crowned Homecoming Queen for 2007 in chilly ceremonies at Tiger Field Friday night, during halftime of the 26-7 victory over the Nampa Bulldogs, capping a week of school spirit activities.
Wright, with her father, Steve, beside her, looked stunned and in tears while being given the crown, a bouquet of roses and congratulatory hugs from her fellow nominees.
Mountain Home High School had put on a Homecoming week to remember. The spirit in the students was so strong that not even a cold, windy Saturday morning before Homecoming Week could keep them from painting various windows of local businesses around town. The paintings all expressed the students' pride in their school.
As Homecoming Week got underway last Monday, school hallways were decorated in grand style. The seniors decorated one hallway in a complete oriental decor, while the juniors decorated their hallway in a complete French decor, including a mock French cafe.
The week began with the annual Macho Man volleyball game, pitting the senior boys against the junior boys. The seniors came out on top in a grueling five-game match.
On Wednesday of last week, one of the favorite homecoming traditions, the Powder Puff flag football game between the senior and junior girls, saw a game of trick plays and hard tackles. The seniors defeated the juniors 14-0.
The concluding day of homecoming, on Friday, began with the afternoon assembly, highlighted by the crowning of the Homecoming King, Brian Cobos.
MHHS principal Jeff Johnson commended the students on their hard work during the week and exclaimed that it was the best homecoming week he had ever been a part of.
The pep assembly featured crowd-pleasing performances by the MHHS dance, step team and drum line, as well as variety of amusing sketches put on by the students, most notably a unique remake of the concluding fight sequence from the film, "300."
Spencer Smith, (MHHS junior) played the role of Leonidas, leading his army, against the large amount of students who played the Persian army, aka the Nampa Bulldogs. "This is Mountain Home!" Smith declared in parody of the film.
In a unique, "blind kiss" ceremony, (with each of the Homecoming king nominee's mothers giving their kids kisses on their cheeks while blindfolded), Cobos was crowned homecoming king to a huge ovation from his fellow classmates.
Johnson announced the winning classes for the week's various competitions. The seniors were awarded winners for Windows and Spirit, while the juniors were named winners for Hallway. The best sketch during the assembly Johnson declared a tie. But the seniors were steadfast on deciding a winner, and insisted on a cheer-off against the rival juniors. However, no real winner was decided.
The annual Homecoming Parade featured well decorated floats by the students, and assistance from the Idaho National Guard, as well as the Mountain Home Fire and Police Department.
The children of Hacker Middle School made up the largest audience to watch the parade. The students were lined up all the way down Jackson Street, ready to cheer on the Tigers.
The bleachers for the homecoming game were decorated in grand fashion commemorating the week's events and all sharing the same theme, "Beat The Bulldogs".
The Tigers took control of the game early going into halftime with a 14-0 lead. The halftime festivities featured a performance by the Mountain Home Junior High School band, entitled "A Night At The Tropics."
The Homecoming Queen ceremony capped off halftime, with the nominees and their family members all driving up to center stage in golf carts.
The Tigers defeated the Nampa Bulldogs 26-7.
Following the game, the homecoming dance was the grand finale to a spirited week. During the dance, the remaining royal court members were crowned. They were:
* Prince--Spencer Smith.
* Princess -- Brenda Hawkins.
* Duke -- Lucas Marsh.
* Duchess -- Lindsay Sessions.
