Glenns Ferry providing first youth soccer team for league

Wednesday, September 19, 2007

A spirited group of 12 young ladies has been seen practicing soccer 2-3 nights a week at the City Park. For the first time in the 22 year history of Mountain Home Youth Soccer Association's competitive soccer program, a group of U-11 girls from Glenns Ferry has made history and stepped up to join the District 3 League (which encompasses all of southwestern Idaho).

Coach Lorri Crandall has volunteered to mentor and teach the girls what it takes to move from recreational soccer to the traveling competitive league.

"The players have been very enthusiastic and the parents and town extremely supportive" said Coach Crandall, as the team learns what all is involved.

"Not only fine tuning their soccer skills of ball handling, but learning plays, rules and positions is instrumental in the success of getting a team together at this young age-and this team has what it takes to be successful." said NHIYSA President Verna Weiss.

The team played their first game on Saturday, Sept. 8, at City Park and were supported by many parents and relatives. Though the Co-Pilots out-shot their opponent and played strong in defense, the team lost to Vallivue 3-1. Coach Crandall was proud at how the girls stayed in their positions and challenged the ball throughout the match.

The Co-Pilots schedule includes away games in Kuna, Middleton, McCall and Caldwell. Remaining home games at City Park are: Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. vs. Caldwell; Oct. 20 at 11:30 a.m. vs. Kuna; and Nov. 3 at 1 p.m vs. Middleton.

Players on the U-11 Girls Glenns Ferry Co-Pilots are: Josie Bryant, Kylee Carpenter, Roni Crone, Melissa Garza, Sky Gennette, Raegan Grigg, Gabriela Hernandez, Anna Orr, Jaycie Shrum, Cassi and Lupita Villavicencio and Elizabeth Zito.

I would love to see dance classes and other things come to town. A good kid stays good when there are fun things to do with their time. Clubs to join, sports to play.... way to go girls......make glenns ferry rock!

I graduated from gf high in 1967. the town sure has changed and the school has too. i am sad to see this....I hope things keep changing.

congrats to you girls! we have already attended two of the football games this year.....good games, fair cheerleadlers but the pep club needs to be inspired.
