Northwest MotorSports back seeking approval for racetrack

Tuesday, August 14, 2007

The Elmore County Planning & Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing on August 15 at 7 p.m. at the American Legion Hall regarding an application from Northwest MotorSports for a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) to build a motocross track off Simco Road.

The company has been seeking approval from the county for almost a year to build a $200 million racetrack complex, War Eagle Speedway, that would be capable of hosting a NASCAR-sanctioned event.

Some concerns raised by citizens included amount of water usage, noise and light pollution and potential traffic congestion from visitors to the proposed facility.

The applicant is seeking to build the Motor Vehicle Race Track and Expo Center in the M1 and M2 Industrial Zones.

  • Hopefully it will raise the property values in the area and we are more profitable in Mountain Home

  • I think this would be a great asset to Mtn, Home, Boise and all the surrounding areas. This will bring tourism, jobs and many highlights to our area.

    Let's do it!!

  • Unless I missed something, would not any congestion be just in the area of the track (Simco Road). I mean I drive to the airbase everyday, as I have since 1999 and I don't see where anyone complains about the traffic. It has only gotten worse over the few years I have been here and most of that is due to the increase in the working population there. But these workers have helped to increase revenues in this area due not only to the materials they buy but also for the food and lodging that they utilize. I see the track as a win/win not only for NorthWest MotorSports but the local area as well. That is my $.02 worth.

  • In regard to traffic on Simco Rd as well as I-84. There was a traffic impact study done on behalf of NWMS that was a total sham. This is of public record and basically the group that was hired by NWMS seem to believe that 25,000 to 200,000 vehicles (the number varies depending upon whom NWMS is speaking with) will not impact traffic whatsoever. They see no reason to change I-84 or the ramps to Simco Rd and will not even install a light, stating that the stop sign will be sufficient.

Take a look at Las Vegas Speedway or Phoenix International Raceway. PIR has 5 lanes of freeway in both directions, 2 lanes each dedicated to moving in and out of the raceway. Humm, something doesn't seem quite right to me.

NWMS has repeatedly told the public that they plan on bringing folks in from Boise, from the airport, from the hotels in Boise etc etc...it sounds like Ada County will benefit much more than Elmore County. It sounds like Ada County will reap the benefits and Elmore County will bear the brunt of providing police, fire and emergency personnel. DOESN'T ANYBODY REMEMBER THAT THE WATER WAS DIVERTED FROM ELMORE COUNY TO ADA COUNTY??? LOOK AT WHAT THAT DID TO ELMORE COUNTY! History is repeating itself folks....something needs to be done!

Property values??? Do you think that people will want to live in the middle of the noise and the traffic of NWMS? Didn't people leave the city to buy land away from the noise and traffic? It's a very scary scenario and the only way this will be stopped is for EVERYBODY to investigate thoroughly and go to your county commissioners with concerns.

P & Z has pretty much made up their minds and citizens of Elmore County are just sitting back and letting it happen. This race track will NOT be all fun and games - there are serious ramifications involved here and nobody seems to be taking a good hard look at the end result.

Not to mention the integrity of the entire project lies with a person who is under indigtment with the state of Idaho for felony offenses. Hello??? Anybody paying attention? I'm very nervous about this and you all should be too.

  • Please calm down. Your letter will be received much better if you minimize the capitalization and exclamation points.

The traffic concerns...there would be no avoiding this as due to it being a safety concern.

Of course more people will be coming from Boise, its a higher population and our airport is there. Why the finger pointing as to who will benefit more? Its for all of us to enjoy together!

I think the one valid point you do have is the water table. That needs to be looked at and agreed upon before anything.

  • Elmore County Planning and Zoning need to take a lesson from Owyhee County. They Passed, quickly,a Nuclear Power Plant and were pleased to have it and the tax base it will provide. By the time the Nascar is passed it will look like we are doing them a favor by letting it come into the County. Nevermind all of the jobs, entertainment, etc. it will provide. If there was an actual Nascar race - imagine the money that would be dumped into our economy and then they would be gone. They would not be like the people that have moved here from other areas that are trying to keep our growth small - "that's the way they like it".
