Henry Hibbert of Glenns Ferry has announced his candidacy on the Democratic ticket for the District 22 senate position.
He will face incumbent Republican Tim Corder in the fall election.
A Vietnam veteran who retired from the Air Force in 1984, Hibbert is a self-employed paralegal, and a state Driving Skills Examiner.
He also is a volunteer at the Glenns Ferry Public Schools, where his wife of 40 years teaches Special Education at Glenns Ferry Elementary School.
He is a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Hibbert said he decided to run as a candidate for the District 22 state senate position "because I want to make Boise and Elmore counties a better place to live and because I am tired of the bickering and lack of vision among our current leaders in the legislature."
He said his believes that "the only way I can beat him (Corder) is on his record.
"I am straight talking and will give you my honest opinion on issues. I will not give you an answer just so that I can get your vote.
"I want our children and grandchildren to have a better education to be able to compete in Idaho, in the United States, and in a global economy.
"I will work to protect and enhance our natural resources, parks and recreational opportunities, and our agriculture."
To accomplish that, he said, "when elected, I will sponsor legislation to attract rural businesses and to reduce the State Personal Income Tax.
"Also, I will submit legislation to give teachers and paraprofessionals a $300 tax deduction, and perhaps another 3 percent pay increase, and to fund after-school programs.
He said that he is "against violence against children and the elderly. I am against domestic violence. I am against repeat offenders getting short sentences."
Hibbert and his wife have five grown children and nine grandchildren.
