The Glenns Ferry Orioles battled back to take the second game of a doubleheader with the Treasure Valley Stars Sunday in Glenns Ferry, to win for the 10th time this season.
Boise Barons 9
Glenns Ferry 8
(8 innings)
Things were looking good for Glenns Ferry early Tuesday night at Bishop Kelly when the Orioles scored three runs in the first inning and five in the second, but two errors by the Orioles in the third inning led to five runs by the Barons, who battled back to tie the game at 8-8 after five.
It stayed tied until the bottom of the eighth, when a walk and a double ended the game 9-8 in favor of the Boise Barons.
Jason Simons went five innings on the mound for Glenns Ferry, striking out five and walking four. Michael DesPres had two scoreless innings before David Zito pitched the eighth for the Orioles.
Glenns Ferry out-hit the Barons 11-10, with Scott Arellano and Jason Simons each getting three hits and two RBIs. Arellano had a home run and Simons a double in that total.
Brett Young and Brian Fields both had two hits, Young, a triple, Fields, an RBI. Jeff Hernandez also had a hit and RBI.
"It was a tough one to lose," said Orioles head coach Denis Uhl after the game. "We led them 8-0 early, but we never scored after they changed pitchers, and we committed two errors in the third inning that led to five runs, and they came back and tied it, and then won it in the eighth."
Glenns Ferry 4
Boise Gems 2
The Orioles got some clutch hits and steady pitching last Thursday at Timberline against the Boise Gems. Scott Arellano and Brett Young both had two hits each including triples, Young an RBI, and Michael DesPres had two hits and drove in two runs.
Jason Simons had a double and Laif Morrison and Justin Case also had hits. Brian Fields and Michael DesPres combined on a four-hitter, Fields striking out three in five innings, DesPres had three strikeouts in two innings.
"It was a real good game!" said Coach Uhl. "We got some good hits back-to-back for three innings, and held them off off with our pitching in the end."
Glenns Ferry 5, 4
Treasure Valley 15, 3
The Orioles got a solid pitching performance from Michael DesPres in the second game of a doubleheader against the Treasure Valley Stars in Glenns Ferry Sunday to manage a split.
Treasure Valley won the first game 15-5.
The Stars rocked Glenns Ferry pitching ace Scott Arellano for 14 runs in the first three innings on their way to a 10-run win in the first game.
Brett Young had two hits and two RBIs in the first game. Brian Fields also had two hits, David Zito had a hit and RBI, and Dustin Johnson also had a hit.
Michael DesPres went the distance in the second game, scattering four hits while striking out five.
Brian Fields had a double and three RBIs, David Zito had two hits, and Scott Arellano, Brett Young, Michael DesPres and Jeff Hernandez all had hits.
"That first game, I tell you what, they just pounded the ball on us, and had three home runs in the first two innings," said Coach Uhl, "and we just never recovered, but the second game, we played some good ball and had a good pitching effort from Michael DesPres."
The Orioles had a doubleheader scheduled Saturday at Ontario against the Treasure Valley Stars, but by game time of the first game, only eight Orioles were there. They played one exhibition game, which they won 7-5, but had to forfeit the game due to only having eight players.
The Orioles took a 10-7 overall record to Eagle for a single game on Monday. They were home to the Centennial Cannons for a single game last (Tuesday) night, and host Caldwell for two games today (Wednesday) starting at 4 p.m.
