Re-zone application expected this week. Elmore County is expected to receive this week an application to re-zone 1,400 acres of agricultural land to industrial use, the first official step needed in the development of a proposed $4.5 billion 1,600-megawatt nuclear power plant in the county, the Mountain Home News has learned...

Four people were injured in a single-car rollover on I-84 Monday. At 4:20 p.m., Chul Kim, driving a 2001 Honda Odyssey on I-84 at mile marker 90, reportedly fell asleep behind the wheel, drove off the westbound lane into the median, overcorrected to the right, came back onto the westbound lane, skidded out of control across the westbound lane, leaving the pavement backwards on the right-hand side 100' farther downrange, where the vehicle overturned and rolled multiple times...

Russia flexed its muscles last week and served notice that what remains of the old Soviet Union is still a bear. As Russia has slowly recovered from the collapse of the USSR it has begun to reassert itself on the world stage. Its invasion of the breakaway Republic of Georgia demonstrates its willingness -- and ability -- to reassert hegamonic control over some of the USSR's former components...

Dear editor: Reference my letter about illegal immigrants and Mr. Riley C. McCarroll's reply there in which he agrees/disagrees with my proposal. A letter to the editor normally is not for the editor primarily but to the public readers in general, which allows the writer to blow off steam, get his opinions published, give thanks, and make recommendations to aid the public, state and country (that was my purpose)...

You can't believe how it warmed the cockles of my heart to see you come forth with our Constitution, and you are so right about that. Not only SHOULD our politicians follow it, they take an OATH to follow it, just like you and I did when we enlisted in the service...

Steve and Yvonne Hughes and Steve and Nora Fuday have announced he engagement of their children, Scott Hughes and Jennifer Fuday. The couple have scheduled an Oct. 18 wedding in Mountain Home. Both are 2007 graduates of Mountain Home High School. Hughes is scheduled to enter the United States Coast Guard on Aug. 19...

Bob and Marianne Baker of Mountain Home will mark their 40th wedding anniversary Aug. 14. A surprise party to honor the occasion was held for them by their children on Aug. 9 in Nampa. The couple were married on Aug. 14, 1968, in Logan, Utah, after they had met at Utah State University...

Mark and Marilyn Goldsberry will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Aug. 31 with a family dinner at Carmela Vineyard. They were married Aug. 31, 1958, in Coin, Iowa. They have two sons and three grandchildren.

Lewis "Andy" LeRoy Anderson, 73, of Bastida Towing in Mountain Home, died Monday, Aug. 11, 2008 at his home. A gathering to remember and celebrate Andy's life will be held Saturday, Aug.16, at 1 p.m. at the home of Bud and Caron Adams.

Joseph Kazyaka, 41, of Mountain Home, died Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, at his home following an illness. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Rost Funeral Home, McMurtrey Chapel in Mountain Home...

Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Black, 79, of Prairie, died at home on Aug. 3, 2008. Funeral services were held Thursday, Aug. 7, at Summers Funeral Homes in Boise. Burial followed at Terrace Lawn Memorial Gardens in Boise. Mary was born Aug. 11, 1923, in Decatur, Ark. She was the first of nine children born to Noah Benton (Sr.) and June Helen Reed...

The final Parks and Recreation tennis clinic for the summer, called the "Follow-up Clinic," will be held Aug. 18-22 at the Richard Aguirre Park tennis courts. MHHS tennis coach Tamzy House will again lead the clinic for Parks and Recreation with help from MHHS Tiger tennis members...

Volleyball tryouts for Mountain Home High School varsity, junior varsity and Mountain Home Junior High School teams will kick off Aug. 15, according to coach Rachele Asbury. All students entering grades 7, 8, 9 and 11, as well as students new to district athletic programs, must have a physical on file before they can take part. ...
