Legacy of Legends 2014 Day 2
Day 2, you can tell everyone is gathering down in the arena to see the 2nd day of colt starting. Today I'm happy that I should be able to stay for the entire thing!
Buck and Mindy
Pretty relaxed looking colt here, don't you think? Some people think that we 'rush' them, .... but it's what they are comfortable with. You kind of need to realize that this whole process is 'new' to them, so this is really the time to introduce whatever you might be ever gonna do on a horse (using common sense of course) If it's introduced in a respectful manner, it can be received in a respected manner. Rudeness is never a way to work with a horse. Buck has his rope down, and the colt isn't bothered a bit. LOOSE 'rein' is key
Many people wait years and years to swing a rope on their 'good ole broke saddle horses' .... THEN it's NEW to them and something they KNOW you've never done before. But today, these colts are being shown a lot that is all new to them, and so why not show them the rope too?
A little kindness goes a long long way. I know some people who absolutely and with intention, NEVER EVER pet their horse. And some have been people who've come to us for lessons or help with something. They have also found that if I ask them to pet their horse for a job well done, and they refuse, (to pet that horse) that I walk away and nothing makes me come back to them. Every living being on this Earth, deserves an "atta boy" for a job well done. Period.
Left is one of the Scholarship Recipients of 2013. He was able to spend time with Wayne Robinson in Texas learning and working with Wayne. He was fortunate (as were all the recipients, no matter who they stayed with) to spend that time with Wayne.
Buster is using his horse to work with this mare
I know I"m showing a lot of photos of this mare, but I absolutely loved every minute of watching him help this mare through her concerns. He lets her feel the rope all over while encouraging her.
Paul Dietz
Kip Fladland
Each of the colts in this session were worked by Buster while he is horseback. It's a good way for a colt to see something up high...and get comfortable with that idea
This mares eyes are so huge and pretty.
Mark Smith in the background is the owner of this mare. He's got to be thrilled with how this is going
Buster mounts from both sides. He gets on and off several times, so she knows it's alright, and that his being there isn't a permanent thing.
Always petting her, so she knows it's still just him up there
Peter Campbell and his colt
Jaton
Wayne Robinson getting some good moves on his colt and the colt looks calm and comfortable with just a halter and lead rope
Nick and Jaton riding their colts very comfortably around the round pen, playing games. One thing about horses, animals in general, is that they feel the confidence of whoever is working with them, and they take cue from the them. The opportunity these colts are having is an a really great one. They feel very confident and free and easy because Jaton and Nick both give them that feeling. * That bay filly in the front is really striding out, * .... a really nervous horse generally doesn't reach that far. They would be short choppy steps, with a tight body. But she is reaching out with head natural, same as Nick's.
And letting the colts have some 'think' time and comfort from one another
Again, he is a relaxed colt, with level head, receiving confidence from his person. He feels that there is nothing to be concerned about, because his person tells him that everything is OK
Look carefully at this colt on his 2nd day under saddle. With just a halter and lead rope on one side. He has the 'rein' in his hands so lightly, asking the colt for a left turn, (asking, not demanding, is very key)
Here the colt IS making the turn, with a big 'bell' in the rope, doing it with 'feeling' Placement of Wayne's feet and body positioning are key here. A big turn isn't happening, but you can see the colt's face is moving to the left...the feet will follow
One more day left!
