The idea behind Robert's Random is for me to write about whatever I'm thinking about whenever I'm thinking it. I try to write 3-5 times a week, but sometimes real work gets in the way of that. Sometimes I'll share whatever random thought I might have that day but most of the time, I like to write about things going on in the news. I'm a total news junkie, I spend a lot of time online at various news sites. If I find a story where someone does something totally stupid or I wonder "what were they thinking?" I don't mind pointing it out incase others missed it or taking my best guess at what they were thinking. I like to laugh, I like to make others laugh. There's so much serious and wrong stuff going on in the news that when I find an unusual or light story, I like to use it. And while real life news events might be the focus of many of my blogs, I'm just trying to entertain you, make you laugh and maybe even think about something you didn't know before reading. I'm not trying to break any serious news or deliver any hard-hitting coverage. You'll have to read a paper or watch one of the network shows for that.
Six reasons Kacey Musgraves should hang out with me when she's in Boise
Dear Kacey,
Boise is an awesome city. Like a lot of country music fans, I am looking forward to your visit and show Wednesday night in Boise.
But before the show, I was wondering if you'd like to hang out for a bit. Here are six reasons to say yes:
1. Boise is a great city. Just look at this list of publications that agree:
A. The Best and Worst Cities for Men 2013: #1 best city (Men's Health)
B. Best drivers in America: # 2 (Allstate Insurance, 2011)
C. Best Towns 2010: #1 Overall Town in Western U.S. (Outside Magazine)
D. Top Ten Cities to Live In: #10
E. One of the 10 best places to live: (U.S. News & World Report, 2009)
F. Best places for business and careers: # 2 (Forbes Magazine, 2008)
G. Urban environment report card: # 6 (Earth Day Network, 2007)
H. Boomtowns: Hottest mid-size cities for entrepreneurs: # 9 (Inc.com, 2007)
I. Most secure places to live (500,000 or more residents): # 1 (Farmers Insurance 2006)
If you're going to be here for a night or two, you should check out the city. The last time you were here, you opened for Kenny Chesney, who took a float down the Boise River a few years ago. It's far too cold to explore the river this time around, but there's some really other great parts of the city worth seeing and I could give you a great tour.
I know you like exploring cities on bikes when you have the chance. Boise is a great city to explore on a bike and is home to the Greenbelt, a 25-mile path that goes through the heart of Boise. Best of all, the Taco Bell Arena is literally on its path. It's where a lot of people get on and off at.
If you didn't bring a bicycle with you this time, I have a few and a bike rack. We could totally make this happen and you wouldn't have to do anything other than get off your bus once it's parked in the Taco Bell Arena parking lot.
2. I'm tall. You're about 5'4" and I'm 5'11". This means you could wear any shoes you want, including your five-inch-heeled cowgirl boots without feeling like a giant around me.
3. I can keep a secret. It's true. I have a Top Secret security clearance from the government. This means you won't have to worry about me telling the press anything we talk about or selling photos of you to National Enquirer .
4. I won't sue you if you decided to write a song about me. People threaten to sue for anything nowadays. Not me.
5. Your boyfriend's invited. Anyone that knows how to use Google knows you have a boyfriend and that he's in your band . Boise's a cool city, he should check it out too.
6. I think you're awesome.
Not because you write chart-topping singles for Ms. Blake Shelton; win Grammys; wear boots that light up on their own; had country music's best rookie year since Brad Paisley released his first album; or the fact that I listened to your song, " Keep it to Yourself" about a dozen times whenever I thought about texting an ex-girlfriend after a recent break up. (Speaking of break ups, I once wrote after listening to your album that you sound like the kind of girl that I like to date, until I googled you. I've definitely never dated anyone as pretty as you.)
You're awesome because you're at the start of your career, and after multiple albums have started to have more than a fair amount of success. You have a little bit of capital built up due to this success and instead of playing it safe and releasing traditional singles like everyone else has done and would continue to do, you release "Follow your Arrow," a song that pushes country music, and those that listen to it, to places it hasn't been before and may never get there on its own if left to its own devices.
You used the Grammy and CMA stages as a platform to spread a message you believe in to an audience that may not agree with that message and did so in a point of your career where you have a lot to lose. That's gutsy. That's brave. And for that, I admire you as a person.
Thank you for your time,
Robert
