The idea behind Robert's Random is for me to write about whatever I'm thinking about whenever I'm thinking it. I try to write 3-5 times a week, but sometimes real work gets in the way of that. Sometimes I'll share whatever random thought I might have that day but most of the time, I like to write about things going on in the news. I'm a total news junkie, I spend a lot of time online at various news sites. If I find a story where someone does something totally stupid or I wonder "what were they thinking?" I don't mind pointing it out incase others missed it or taking my best guess at what they were thinking. I like to laugh, I like to make others laugh. There's so much serious and wrong stuff going on in the news that when I find an unusual or light story, I like to use it. And while real life news events might be the focus of many of my blogs, I'm just trying to entertain you, make you laugh and maybe even think about something you didn't know before reading. I'm not trying to break any serious news or deliver any hard-hitting coverage. You'll have to read a paper or watch one of the network shows for that.
Dog saves child from abusive babysitter
Today's hero of the day is Killian, a lab and German shepherd mix from Charleston, South Carolina. Thanks to Killian, a lady was convicted of child abuse earlier this week.
Killian's family, Benjamin and Hope Jordan and baby Finn, hired 22-year-old Alexis Khan to baby sit Finn about a year ago. Despite passing a background check the Jordans conducted, Khan didn't pass Killian's sniff test.
"About five months into her being our baby sitter, we started to notice that our dog was very defensive of our son when she would come in the door," Benjamin Jordan said. "He was very aggressive towards her and a few times we actually had to physically restrain our dog from going towards her."
Hope Jordan wanted to investigate Killian's behavior, so she left an iPhone under a couch one day. What the Jordans discovered when they listened to the recording was every parent's worst nightmare: Khan cussing at their child, then the sound of smacking and their seven-month-old son crying out in pain. Finn did not suffer any permanent injuries.
Khan was arrested and pleaded guilty to assault and battery. There wasn't enough evidence from the recording to press charges, but Khan confessed to police when questioned.
She was sentenced to three years of prison and must complete a minimum of one year in prison before she is eligible for probation. She must register as a child abuser and can no longer work with children. Not bad work for a dog.
