The idea behind Robert's Random is for me to write about whatever I'm thinking about whenever I'm thinking it. I try to write 3-5 times a week, but sometimes real work gets in the way of that. Sometimes I'll share whatever random thought I might have that day but most of the time, I like to write about things going on in the news. I'm a total news junkie, I spend a lot of time online at various news sites. If I find a story where someone does something totally stupid or I wonder "what were they thinking?" I don't mind pointing it out incase others missed it or taking my best guess at what they were thinking. I like to laugh, I like to make others laugh. There's so much serious and wrong stuff going on in the news that when I find an unusual or light story, I like to use it. And while real life news events might be the focus of many of my blogs, I'm just trying to entertain you, make you laugh and maybe even think about something you didn't know before reading. I'm not trying to break any serious news or deliver any hard-hitting coverage. You'll have to read a paper or watch one of the network shows for that.
What Obama's win doesn't mean
The networks are calling the presidency for Obama, more than an hour after I called it myself at my house. Following the announcement, the talking heads spent the next ten minutes talking about what his win meant for racial relations in our country.
When the son of a black man sears into office in January, it will have significant meaning.
But there is a lot his win doesn't mean.
His win does not signify the end of racial tension in this country. It is not the end-all or the final step for minorities in the United States.
It's an important and huge step, but it doesn't undo the hundreds of years of discrimination. Nor does it signify the end of discrimination. Obama's win does not put people of all color on a level playing field in this country. There will still be discrimination in this country tomorrow morning.
People will still be judged and treated unfairly based on the color of their skin. All the problems facing minorities yesterday will still be present tomorrow. There are so many problems in our country dealing with racial inequality it's insane to think they can all be fixed in one night, regardless how historical it may be.
There's still a long way to go for that in this country. I hope we get there eventually, and much sooner than later.
The pundits keep repeating America chose an African-American man to be our next president.
I find that notion to be offensive for I did not chose an African-American to be our next president and sincerely hope voters in large numbers did not go to the polls toselect an African-American.
Instead, I hope they went into the poll and chose Barack Obama to lead this country for the next four years.
