Reno will be Safe for Another Year
I'm driving down to Reno for a few days and will be back next week. I'll be attending our annual Khe Sanh reunion, usually held somewhere back east or midwest, but THIS year's reunion is in Reno..........works for me, well within driving range.
I fought at Khe Sanh during the TET Offensive of 1968. Wanting to start an annual reunion for all who fought there, our former Navy Chaplain Ray Stubbe started rounding up old Marines and Navy Corpsmen on "Al Gore's" internet about 25 years ago. They managed to find ME about 8 years ago. I've been to 2 of them so far. One in Chicago and another one in Charleston, S.C. The last 5 have been held in Dallas, Washington D.C. (twice), Mobile Alabama and again in Chicago..........too far for some of us west coast guys.
But THIS year.....RENO. Less than 10 hours, even in an old Volkswagen Beetle, which I will drive, so as to NOT pay the ragheads anymore for gas than necessary. ***OOPS...I meant to say "our Arabic neighbors across the Atlantic in the Muslim-occupied regions of the Opec areas.""***
Everyone says "Have Fun." Well..........it'll certainly be good to see a few of my old war buddies again, sit around telling lies and swapping war stories. Saturday night, we have the banquet, where we get to listen to even MORE speeches.
It'll be good, though, even if not a "traditional Reno adventure." You see:
I don't gamble, and even if I did, I can't stand the cigarette smoke in the casinos.
Being a diabetic, I can't even drink a beer.
I love my wife, and don't chase other women.
Let's see now, what else do people do in Reno?? Get married? No, I've already done that, and I sure as heck ain't getting divorced.
The National Automobile Museum (which is a small part of what used to be Harrah's) is there. I can do THAT! Walk around town and buy a few souveniers, maybe. The remaining couple of days, I'll just be doing "Marine things" with my brothers at the reunion. Nothing terribly exciting.
So, Reno will be safe for at least another year.........from ME anyway. I can't speak for all my other gray-haired bro's!
And I'm gonna make a few factions in Mountain Home SO PROUD of me...........during our combat rememberances, I'm going to make every effort to refrain from saying anything that might offend any former North Vietnamese military personnel of Communist-doctrinated-persuasion, (how'd ya like THAT one?).
And if you believe THAT..................
Be back in a few days.
