He was born on March 11, 1917, in Sharon, Idaho, to John and Amy Gertsch and was the sixth of their seven children. He graduated from Bear Lake High School in Montpelier, Idaho. After high school, he went to work for the Civil Conservation Corp. (CCC) in Cambridge, Idaho, and then began his long career with Union Pacific Railroad.
After marrying Jeanette Elizabeth Messerly on Nov. 15, 1941, they moved to Glenns Ferry where they lived for the remainder of their lives. Throughout his life, he enjoyed the outdoors that is Idaho whether it was camping, fishing, hunting or just driving to see the autumn colors.
Another enjoyment of his life was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren whether it was sporting activity to watch, fishing with them or just sitting and reading a story. He will be greatly missed.
