Local school board candidates respond to public questions

Fostering trust and understanding while promoting academic excellence among local area students highlighted the goals of five individuals running for the Mountain Home School Board, who met Monday evening during a political forum.

A crowd of about 75 people, including a significant number of local educators, gathered at the Mountain Home Elks Lodge to ask questions to these candidates with their responses helping the public to understand their positions regarding the future of the school board.

    This was a great forum -- well guided by the Chamber of Commerce -- that gave us who attended the opportunity to understand the level of leadership these men propose to bring to the table this next term. While much was made of obvious needs like "leadership" and "money" the final note that was shared by at least two candidates was the need to restore trust by the taxpaying public. Mr. Brago and Mr. Binney seemed most clear on this in light of the levy failure several years ago. Others were a bit less clear on this but seemed to be open to this need. For some reason, Mr. Checketts seemed to be quite frustrated about the questions and what he was not allowed to say in this forum so he came across as rather upset more than the others. I hope that in the future we can have an informational town meeting where the board can explain themselves rather than be confined to direct answers to whatever the audience might choose to ask.
