Mountain Home's kindness remembered
Dear editor:
In the early seventies I was stationed at Mountain Home AFB, Idaho.
In the late summer or early fall of 1972 I decided on a whim to drive out and visit the Duck Valley Indian Reservation (Owyhee, ID)
Somewhere along the the way I developed two flat tires leaving me totally stranded. I was now on foot out in the middle of nowhere. I believe this occurred on a late Sunday afternoon or early evening. I was well aware that on foot I could not possibly make it back to the Air base on time before being declared AWOL. As fate would have it I stumbled on to a man and his wife and their young child having a cookout out in the desert. I explained to them my dilemma and they both readily agreed they would get me back to the base on time. However they both insisted that I first eat with them as their food was almost ready. Having walked countless miles I was very hungry at the time and eagerly accepted their offer. During our meal they both shared some amusing tales about local potato farmers and interesting incidents that had occurred in the area. I am sure these people had something to do with potato farming. After our meal they promptly returned me to the Mountain Home Air Force Base and in so doing literally saved my behind.
I have always wanted to reach out and find these people and thank them again and again for the kindness they showed me that day. To this very day I have never forgotten these people or their unselfish deed....If anyone knows who these good Samaritans were please contact me.
