Mary Garbutt
Mary Elizabeth Garbutt, 91, passed away Sunday, April 14, 2013, at a Mountain Home care center.
Mary was a loving, caring daughter, sister, wife and mother.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., on Saturday, April 20, at Rost Funeral Home, McMurtrey Chapel. Inurnment will be in Rawlins, Wyo., at a later date, next to her husband.
Mary was born May 22, 1921, in Serene, Colo., to Mary and Jim Johnson. The oldest of four children, she learned at an early age to help her mom.
She graduated from Cheyenne High School in Wyoming, participating in a work study program as a sales clerk. Her family owned a coal mine at Hanna so she delivered coal to Cheyenne for them on her commute to school.
Mary married Allan W. Garbutt on Sept. 21, 1941, in Cheyenne, Wyo. They had two daughters, Merrilee and Carol.
Mary and Allan owned the Rawlins Sand and Gravel and Cement Company for many years where she was the bookkeeper.
They were very involved in their Masonic family. Mary was a Past Queen of Daughters of the Nile and Past Matron of Eastern Star. She traveled all over Wyoming while fulfilling those duties and met and maintained many wonderful friendships.
After selling the business, they went to China and vacationed on a cruise ship. Upon Allan's death in 1988, she joined a travel group and traveled extensively until her health would not permit it. At that time, she sold her home in Wyoming and moved to a retirement center in Boise and then in 2012 to The Cottages in Mountain Home.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband Allan, parents, a brother Jimmy, and her daughter Carol.
She is survived by her daughter Merrilee and her husband John Hiler, grandchildren Jaleene Bruce, Sandy and her husband Ted Cantrell, J.A. and wife Tina Grieve, Tom Benson, Robert Benson and Stuart Benson, great-grandchildren, Jaton, Kalon and Lynlee Lord, Ellie, Anna and Clay Cantrell, and Austin and Aubrey Grieve, and great-great-grandchild Ocean Lord, sister Ladessa Winters, brother Melvin Johnson, and son-in-law Robert Benson, cousins, nieces and nephews.
She always loved that John's (Hiler) family included her as family. making get-togethers fun for her.
