UPDATE: Interstate reopened after fire prompts closure

Monday, June 11, 2012

A stretch of the interstate north of Mountain Home was reopened around 4:45 p.m. Monday following a temporary closure.

A brush fire on the north side of the interstate prompted the closure.

According to initial reports, a controlled fire on Beaman Road flared out of control around 4:20 p.m. The fire threatened to bring down power lines in the area, which cross the interstate around milepost 91. As a precaution, local law enforcement officers had closed the east- and westbound lanes of the highway for approximately 10 minutes as crews extinguished the blaze.

  • Seems always the same the same story, a controlled burn out of control caused the fire. Here's my question; Are there any Fire Dep rules concerning controlled burns? Why is ANYONE allowed to have a controlled burn when high winds are predicted? The wind yesterday was NOT unexpected. It was furcated. Looks like a couple issues here that are putting people's lives in danger. 1. Whoever issued the permit allowing the burn on a forecasted windy day and the individual in-charge of the burn. How about this folks; stop putting citizens lives in danger because you're too ignorant to realize you shouldn't burn on a windy day.

  • It isn't 4:20 Friday yet. Do you know something we don't. We sat on the interstate for almost 2 hours yesterday, Then turned around and went back to the Grandview road.

  • Yes, a little confusing, but there was also wildfire that occured and destroyed 5 homes and several out buildings -- so I guess it is a matter of figuring out which fire is which and when.

  • I wrote a similar comment yesterday but it has been deleted. What is this Mtn Home News, censorship? My point was; it is far too common a story that these fires get started because of a controlled burn getting out-of-control. The day of this controlled burn, high winds were predicted/forecasted. I contend that those responsible should be held responsible for endangering people's lives. When winds are predicted, no controlled burn should be allowed. It's not rocket science.
