City wraps up new program geared specifically for girls
Nearly two dozen girls boosted their self confidence, learned to deal with peer pressure and improved their athletic abilities during a new after-school program.
Hosted by the city's parks and recreation department, the Girls on the Run program used the power of physical activity, life lessons and positive mentoring to prepare these youngsters "for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living," said program director Melissa Bixby.
Over the past 2 1/2 months, the 22 participants met twice a week at North Elementary School to participate in interactive activities, like walking, running and playing games while they discussed issues related to others their age.
