Egusquiza 3rd at state hoop shoot
Marcus Egusquiza of Mountain Home finished third in the Idaho State Finals of the Elks Hoop Shoot on Saturday in Kellogg.
State Director Keith Mills said during the awards banquet that evening that it was the tightest he has ever seen it come down to with the boys in that age group.
"There was only one basket difference between first, second and third place," Mills said. "(This) required a shoot-off for the first two spots and only a three-basket difference between all the boys competing in that division."
Egusquiza was disappointed but Mountain Home Hoop Shoot Director Larry Fincher called him "our champion."
Egusquiza attended the event with his parents, Mitch and Brenda Egusquiza, his big brother, Jake, and Chairman Fincher and his wife, Brenda. They said they were proud of Egusquiza and his effort at the event. This was his fourth year participating in the annual event.
"It's his never give up attitude that is an inspiration to us all," Fincher said. "Marcus has advanced to state levels in three of those years. Big brother Jake was the same way. He participated each year until he was past the age limit, but is still there cheering on his brother.
"None of the 30 children representing the different districts throughout Idaho, no matter how they placed," Fincher said, "are anything but beyond amazing. They are the top 30 of over 38,000 children that competed this year in the Idaho Elks Hoop Shoot.
"It could not happen without our local schools and teacher support that we receive each year," he added.
"I would like to thank all of them, and my local support system that I have each year for another great and exciting year We will do this again next year."
