UPDATE -- Man charged in head-on I-84 crash that killed four
An arrest warrant has been issued for a Wendell man charging him with four counts of felony vehicular manslaughter following a head-on crash on I-84 Thursday evening near Glenns Ferry that killed four members of a California family.
Eusebio Jacobo Pineda, 45, had bond set at $250,000. He will be taken into custody by Idaho State Police and transported to the Elmore County Jail to await an initial appearance before a magistrate as soon as he is medically cleared to do so.
ISP officials said Pineda was driving a 2001 Ford F150 pickup eastbound in the westbound lanes of the interstate when he collided with Amado Herrera, 48, of South El Monte, Calif., who was driving a 2010 Mazda four-door sedan in the westbound fast lane.
Herrera and three family members died instantly upon impact. The three passengers killed were his wife, Luz Herrera, his 18-year-old daughter, Yvette Herrera, and his 10-year-old son, Antoni Herrera. They are survived by other family members in California. The family was going to the Nampa-Caldwell area to visit family.
Pineda's vehicle rolled after impact with Herrera's vehicle. He was transported by air ambulance to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise with non-life-threatening injuries.
ISP officials said alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash, however Pineda's blood alcohol content is pending final analysis.
The accident occurred at approximately 8:49 p.m. and blocked the westbound lanes of I-84 for approximately four hours. Traffic was diverted through Glenns Ferry to U.S. Highway 30 until the roadway could be cleared.
Herrera and his passengers were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash. It is unknown at this time whether Jacobo Pineda was wearing a seatbelt.
The reason Pineda was in the wrong lane on the interstate is unknown at this time. The crash is still under investigation by Idaho State Police.
Voluntary manslaughter carries a punishment of up to 15 years in prison and/or a $15,000 fine.
Elmore County deputies, EMS personnel and the Idaho Transportation Department assisted at the crash scene.
