Tiger track team looks good, even against 5A schools
The Mountain Home Tigers competed at the Bandana Invitational Track and Field meet at Mountain View last Friday and Saturday.
With all ten 5A SIC schools competing, six of the 4A SIC schools along with, Vale, Ore., the Mountain Home girls finished fifth while the Tiger boys came in 10th.
Mountain Home had two first-place efforts in the girls competition.
Emily Moranda won the 300-meter hurdles.
The Mountain Home 4x200-meter relay team, composed of Angelica Rios, Lauren Moore, Jessica Liercke and Kristie Sigloh, took first, shattering the old school record of 1:50.5 with an impressive 1:48.15.
Jasym Jewett placed second in the triple jump, and the 4x100-meter relay team of Angelica Rios, Sherica Holmon, Jessica Liercke and Emily Moranda also finished second.
Jessica Liercke had a fourth-place effort in the triple jump, Emily Moranda was fifth in the 100-meter high hurdles, and Kristie Sigloh was seventh in the triple jump.
In the boys competition, Tyree Harmon came in second in the 110-meter high hurdles. Garrett Wood finished third in the triple jump and fourth in the 300-meter hurdles.
The Tigers 4x100-meter relay team of Jacob Viola, Nick Barrie, Tallon Pauly and Jesse Donez finished fifth.
Mountain Home Tiger head track coach Rich Urquidi was pleased with their efforts at the Bandana meet.
"The kids stepped up and ran awesome. The girls placed fifth overall, out of 17 schools, and they were the top 4A team there, and we beat some 5As. The girls' 4x2(00-meter relay) broke a school record, and all our relays ran their best times of the year there.
"It was a beautiful day, too, so that always helps. The coaches, we were really excited.
"We're pretty much where we want to be in the middle of the season. This was our first big meet of the year and some of our younger athletes got introduced to kind of what a big championship meet is like."
The Tigers go to Kuna and Vallivue this week, with a Kuna meet on Thursday and the Vallivue Invitational on Friday.
"We'll split our squad again this week, but probably won't send as many to the JV meet (at Kuna) this time," said Coach Urquidi. "We get to put three people into the Vallivue Invitational, so we can take a few more kids there, and that should be a good meet with 5As and 4As, and maybe an Oregon school or two, so that should be a good meet also, and again, we're right in the middle of the season and now it's time to start turning some things on, and we're looking forward to finishing out the year strong."
At last Thursday's JV meet at Timberline, the Mountain Home girls finished second behind Timberline, and ahead of Meridian, while the boys finished third behind Timberline and Meridian.
