Public needs to support bus service
Dear editor:
I don't suppose many local people have a need for a bus service, like Greyhound. But did you know there is no bus service available departing from or arriving in Mountain Home from other destinations?
While in a doctor's office in Boise recently, this was brought to my attention by a former resident of Mountain Home. Her daughter wanted her to take the bus from Boise to spend the day with her in Mountain Home. After investigating, I found Greyhound had suspended all bus service to this area.
Evidently no one here wanted to accommodate the bus company by providing a bus stop. Formerly it was at Hiler Brothers, then The Pilot truck stop, and then the Chevron service station at exit 90.
I find this situation disconcerting considering the growth of Mountain Home and with the airbase located here.
There is one very respected businessman, Herb Hawley, interested in providing a downtown depot to Salt Lake Express, a bus company in Utah. They would provide bus service from Mountain Home to Mountain Home Air Force Base, Salt Lake City, Boise, the airport, and the Greyhound Bus Depot (in Boise).
I would urge everyone to contact their city, county and state officials and let them know how much we need a bus route in this area. I think with the price of gasoline many people would take advantage of this service if it were available.
