Cops deserve high praise
Dear editor:
I would like to ask Paul Thirion about his letter to the editor. He bashes the police in general but does not say what they did wrong in his eyes. He says grandmothers and children are afraid of police.
I am a grandmother and I hold the police in high regard. They have a difficult job to do. They put their lives on the line for each of us. As a law-abiding citizen I appreciate them. Maybe one might make a mistake from time to time but we all make mistakes. Overall, they do a great job.
Why does Paul Thirion think that filling our jails is going to pay for the new facilities. It costs taxpayers for every person in jail. We pay for their room and board and many times their legal defense. I think we treat inmates too good. We need to make them work hard so when they get out they will obey the law so they will not have to return to jail.

I agree with Larry Heinen that the NRA is right about teaching our children gun safety. They need to know what to do if they see or find a gun. It sure would be better if toy companies would stop making toy guns.

Dave Pursell running for county commissioner has many good ideas. Looking at alternate energy resources, as well as encouraging conservation and recycling is excellent.
I am strong on recycling. I recycle everything that can possibly be recycled. I either give away good things I no longer need, or put papers, cans, plastic, cardboard, etc., in the blue bin to recycle. I urge all the citizens to do that. It takes a little effort to sort things out but it saves our environment for future generations.
The city makes it easy by picking it up at the curb. I used to have to put it in my car and take it to the Parks and Recreation recycle site.
I think recycling helps Pursell in his effort to make sure every dollar spent is well spent.
Also, on the same subject, I urge all mothers to use cloth diapers on their infants. All those disposable diapers wind up in our landfill. They take many many years to decompose. We will be dead and gone and they will still be there.
I used cloth diapers for my child and I did not have a washing machine in my apartment. I had to haul them to a laundromat. If you are lucky enough to have a washing machine in your house use it for diapers but wash them alone. You will be helping the environment and saving yourself a lot of money. We can all use more money to buy what we really need.
