Major gas leak quickly repaired

A major gas leak caused emergency crews to block off traffic in a two block area at West 12th South and Isaac Lane on Tuesday, June 5.

A two-inch gas supply line was broken while construction was being done in the area by Alloway Electric near the new subdivision, Colonial Estates.

"It was a pretty good size gas line, and the wind was blowing it (the gas) away from houses back toward the construction," said firefighter Brian Reed.

A Boise crew from Intermountain Gas responded to the call because they were in town doing work near the Desert Canyon Golf Course, said Reed.

At the scene "they (Intermountain Gas workers) dug up the broken gas line and pinched it to contain the leak," said Reed, and "the repairs (to the gas line) were done within hours (of it happening)," said Brent Wilde with

Intermountain Gas.

No homes were evacuated, and there were no interruptions of gas service due to the leak, but traffic was stopped from entering the area for about an hour. "Safety is our business, and that is our first concern," said Wilde.

The gas line break is still under investigation, and the cost of damage is not known at this time.
