We’re going to pay people to go back to work, so where is the hazard pay for essential workers?
While trying to decide what I should write I just kept thinking about the fact that I never thought I would see the day that our Governor would actually say we need to pay people money to give them incentive to go back to work.
It kind of leaves one dumbfounded. Don’t get me wrong I can see how people making $7.25 an hour on a usual basis might wish they could continue getting over $600 a week when, in some cases, they aren’t making that in two weeks. However, how is this fair to the essential workers who have been working for months for minimum wage?
They weren’t able to claim unemployment and get whatever their normal claim would be, plus the additional $600 given as part of the COVID-19 Relief package. They have been working their butts off with additional duties trying to keep up with things like sanitizing. They’ve also had to deal with customers with a lot shorter patience, because lets face it, everyone’s nerves have been on edge lately. According to health experts this highly contagious virus has left these “essential workers’ on the frontline of a pandemic in which they were more likely to catch a possibly deadly illness. Not only would they be putting their own health at risk, but with an illness that can quickly spread they are putting their whole household at risk. They were also still trying to find childcare and having to figure out how to make sure homeschooling was going smoothly with their children. Way more responsibilities, while their friends and aquaintences were, in many instances, making more money than they ever have before. All while being laid off and able to keep their children home safely and work on their schooling with them.
Many parents have said that the little bright spot of the past few months was all of the time they’ve gotten with their families. Our essential workers did not get that, many of them had to throw their children into childcare circumstances they’ve never been in before just to keep receiving a paycheck. Where are these peoples funds to thank them for a hard job done well? Where is their hazard pay for when they went to work everyday to keep our country moving while everyone else stayed safely at home?
