School sports are back in full force and we need your help
As many of you know, school sports are back with a vengeance and we have a lot of schools in our coverage area that deserve some recognition!
I have heard a lot of complaints that there isn’t more in our local paper about our sports teams. I completely understand that frustration, I am a huge advocate of youth activities and realize that everyone wants to see more coverage. I too want to see more coverage.
However, I unfortunately do not have the manpower or enough time in my day to cover these events as much as they deserve. I just can’t possibly be everywhere at once and neither can my part-time reporter Amber.
For years, all of the local communities were lucky enough to have someone like Alvin Powers who was so passionate about our youth and school activities that he gave so much of his free time to fill our local papers with their trials and successes. I know this on a personal level, because growing up as a Glenns Ferry kid, he often wrote about our teams. Getting your name mentioned in one of his articles was something to be proud of. I don’t think we could ever possibly hope to find another Alvin again, he was one of a kind. I know he had many a late night waiting for coaches to return after long bus trips in order to ensure everyone got a timely shout out for what they achieved that week.
One of the proudest moments of my adult life was when he attended my wedding (he was a good friend of my father-in-law and MHHS Coach Doug Root). He made sure I knew that he remembered exactly who I was and what activities I had competed in over ten years after I finished school, saying to me “Well Doug finally has his runner in the family.” Not only did he care about all of us while we were still active kids, he continued to care about us for the rest of his life. He had a way of making us feel like stars on the playing field and in the classroom and that is something that all kids deserve.
That is why we need the community’s help in gathering photos, scores and highlights each week. Here in Mountain Home we hear the mantra “one town, one team” all the time. Well, please consider being a member of the Mountain Home News team and sending in information about the games you attend while watching your children, grandchildren or just former schools play ball. We will happily use information we get, to help keep the communities of Mountain Home, Glenns Ferry and Bruneau/Grand View informed as much as we can.
