What IS a “Perfect 300?”
If you're a bowler, a "perfect game" is 300.
If you're into MoPar luxury, the "perfect" car for YOU would probably be the Chrysler 300.
And if you lived way back in the deepest woods of the northwest, where the big game animals are a bit larger than most, and often dangerous, and you could only have ONE rifle, I believe that rifle should be a 300 Winchester Magnum.
Essentially a "souped-up" 30.06, the 300 Win. Mag. is an IDEAL choice for ANYWHERE in the great northwest. Depending on the load, it is versatile enough for deer & elk, yet powerful enough for moose or even grizzly.
While I no longer have any great passion for hunting animals, (except for survival), and I no longer reload.......back when I DID reload my own ammo, I found the 300 Win. Mag. to be a handloader's DREAM!
At the risk of starting an "age-old" cartridge feud, I will openly state that I like the 300 over the ever-popular 7mm Magnum.....especially when you're loading your own, and you find a CONSIDERABLY better selection of bullet weights and designs in the 30-caliber world.....from 110-grains for coyotes & wolves, to 220-grains for moose & bear------and a lot of weights in-between.
A good analogy of the 300 Winchester, is to think of revolvers for a moment----just as the 357 came from the 38.........the 300 Win. sort of came from our "tried & true" 30.06.................
......except, unlike the 38/357 pistol cartridge, the 300 Winchester CASE is larger in diameter than the '06, as well as a bit longer, so it holds more powder-----but pushing the same bullet. Where you might get 3,000 feet per second out of a 30.06 with a 150-grain spirepoint..........you can safely push that exact same projectile from 3,200 to 3,400 feet per second out of a 300 Win. Mag. The result of course, is a faster and "flatter" flying bullet that hits its quarry with more authority.
Basically put........anything the 30.06 can do.................................the 300 Winchester can do BETTER! (The '06 on the left is a Remington 700-----------and the 300 Win Mag on the right, is a Ruger M-77, topped with a Leupold 4 X 12 and a Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad.
While the 300 has more recoil than the 30.06 (shown here), it is not un-manageable,
And a good aftermarket recoil pad like this "Decelerator" or the equally-popular "Limb-Saver", can be worth it's wait in GOLD.....especially during initial "sight-in" from the bench.
There are a lot of good calibers out there, some better than others for specific tasks.......the 22-250 for varmints.......our favorite old 30-30 and 270 for deer........the 30.06, 7MM Magnum for elk, etc..........
But for sheer power and versatility, the 300 Winchester Magnum would "take care of business" no matter WHERE you found yourself.
You can load it DOWN for coyotes........UP for big bear.......or a lot of different places in-between.
In pistol/rifle jargon............it is a "357 Magnum" among a herd of "38's"
The 300 Win. Mag. can do it ALL........and do it all well.
