When They Were Real Steel….last 3 & Beyond
# 61
I went clear to Portland to haul this one back, a 1954 VW "Oval Window", one of the more "collectable" Bugs. It has a 1600cc single-port motor and is a pretty fun & unique little car.

I bought this '73 Super Beetle in 2009. 1600cc dual-port engine. Last year I drove this bug all the way to Washington D.C. & back. A tiring trip in a little car, but it never missed a beat and I didn't spend very much money in gas!

If there's a single car on this entire blog that rightly represents the old "Zook", it would be the last one I've bought, this old 1964 Ford Fairlane 500 4-door sedan. It has a small block "260" V-8 with a "3-on-the-tree" standard transmission. Just a "plain-Jane" looking old 4-door sedan. Nothing special really, just a good old 60's car!
NOW---------------these have been the 63 cars I'VE owned, the photos adorning my scrapbook. I didn't include Donna's cars in my PERSONAL scrapbook, because they aren't cars that I'd have bought for myself.............but I'll include them HERE...........
These are HERS.......(actually ALL of our cars are in her name, in case something should happen to me)......but THESE are the "Donna cars".........
1962 VW convertible, 1600 dual-port. We restored this one from the ground-up, did a lot of custom work on this thing, special interior, woodwork, paint, different-year fenders, stereo system, the works!
We went to Hamilton, Montana to get this '72 Oldsmobile "442" , and it's become one of her "hot rods!" It's got a "built 350" with a mild cam, and gets down the street pretty well!
We each have our own idea of "what an Oldsmobile IS" It's really cool when your spouse shares your hobby!
I SHOULD have taken photos of her '66 Mustang BEFORE we restored it......you'd never know today, that it was the same car!
Totally done, inside & out. The little "200" 6-cylinder is enhanced with "split headers and dual exhaust. A "triple combination" of performance, fuel economy and mechanical "access!"
But Donna's REAL "hot rod" is not that pretty 442........it's this "still-to-be-painted" 1967 Mercury Cougar GT.
At just over 2700 lbs, it's much lighter than the 442.........and with a Holley-topped 320 horsepower "390" under it......that Cougar will pin you back into the seat!
Her 1956 DeSoto is another one of those cars you don't see everyday. With its rebuilt "330" Hemi and interior done, all it needs now is paint and a few other odds & ends. (you almost need a Harbor Tug license to drive it!------for me though, it's pretty "old school"------I learned to drive in cars like this).
DARN!!........that was too much FUN! Now I've got to come up with something else to write about..........
Hope y'all enjoyed a trip down "memory lane"......(or BOULEVARD maybe!)
